Bootleg Universe Contest Finalist
At the beginning of September, my three friends and I decided to participate in the ScreenCraft website's short screenplay contest being held in partnership with Adi Shankar, a filmmaker with an anthology series on Youtube called Bootleg Universe.
The goal was to pick any existing property and write a script no longer than 30 pages.
My friends chose The Green Hornet, Predator, and Magnum P.I., while I was given the suggestion of doing a script for The Monster Squad, an 80's classic wherein a group of children battle the Universal monsters (Dracula, The Mummy, Wolfman, etc.).
We had four weeks to write our scripts before the submission deadline at the beginning of October. So, for four weeks, we all brainstormed, wrote, read each others scripts, critiqued, and edited over and over and over and over again, until it was time to submit.
The winner and finalists were announced in mid-December, and my script for The Monster Squad: Redemption was listed in the top 50 finalists out of over 500 submissions. There are many other interesting sounding scripts listed that I really wish I could read.
It's the first time I've been recognized like that in a screenwriting competition, and I'm very excited about it! Every writer is unsure about how effective and entertaining their writing is, and this certainly gave me a little confidence boost that I'm not completely clueless in how I write.
I'm looking forward to participating in more competitions in 2017.
